SFF-8636 — QSFP management

SFF-8636, the Management Interface for Cabled Environments, defines management for QSFP-class modules — QSFP+ and QSFP28 (succeeding the earlier SFF-8436). Because these modules carry four lanes, the interface reports diagnostics per lane.

Paged memory

Unlike SFP's two addresses, SFF-8636 uses a single two-wire address with paged memory:

  • A lower page (bytes 0–127) is always accessible and holds the most-used

monitors, status and controls.

  • Upper pages (bytes 128–255) are swapped in by writing a **page-select byte at

address 127**. Different pages hold identity, thresholds, and vendor data.

What it reports

  • Per-lane RX/TX optical power and laser bias, plus module temperature and

voltage.

  • Alarm and warning thresholds, on their own page.
  • Identity and capability fields decoded with the SFF-8024

code tables.

A page-select model means the byte at 127 must be set before reading an upper page — the app handles this for you.
