Optical Ethernet interfaces
Ethernet optical interfaces follow a naming pattern like 10GBASE-SR. Reading the suffix tells you the medium, reach and wavelength a transceiver is built for.
Reading the suffix
- S — short reach on multi-mode fibre, 850 nm.
- L — long reach on single-mode fibre, 1310 nm.
- E / Z — extended/very long reach on single-mode, around 1550 nm.
- R — 64b/66b line coding (10G and above).
- A trailing number is the lane count —
SR4andLR4use four lanes.
